Auto Parts – Axle Housing
As a core load-bearing component for heavy trucks and commercial vehicles, ductile iron axle housings enjoy stable market demand. At the same time, the industry presents a pattern of "excess capacity in the low-end segment and shortage in the high-end segment." OEMs continue to raise their requirements for the surface precision, consistency, and yield rate of axle housing castings, and traditional extensive grinding methods can no longer meet the needs of high-end supporting applications.
Axle housings are mostly formed through sand casting. Their complex structures and uneven wall thicknesses make them prone to defects such as flashes, burrs, oxide scale, and porosity residue during the casting process. Because axle housings generally feature multiple bends, complex special-shaped curved surfaces, and high casting hardness, manual grinding suffers from difficult-to-reach areas, uneven grinding allowances, heavy dust, low efficiency, and high reject rates, making it a core pain point in casting post-processing.
To address the industry's grinding challenges, Quanyu Industry has developed an automated grinding solution based on 3D vision deviation correction technology. The equipment uses 3D vision scanning to precisely locate each axle housing and obtain its actual contour point cloud. Algorithms are used to calculate deformation in real time and automatically compensate for it. Combined with rigid-flexible composite grinding tools, it precisely removes residual roots, flashes, and burrs, avoiding under-grinding and over-grinding. The equipment offers strong compatibility, can adapt to axle housing castings of different specifications, and flexibly supports production line upgrades.
After implementation, the solution helped the customer completely resolve the pain points of poor manual grinding precision and low consistency. The qualified rate of casting surfaces increased significantly, and grinding process efficiency doubled. It effectively reduced labor costs and safety hazards, decreased material loss, and ensured stable delivery to high-end OEM supporting standards, helping the customer enhance core competitiveness in the high-end axle housing casting market and achieve a dual breakthrough in cost reduction, efficiency improvement, quality enhancement, and stable production.
